below for the links to the current and previous issues of Why the name apUrvavANI? Our associate editor, Raghavendra Hebbalalu explains "The word vANI variously signifies a dignified voice or a language or sarasvatI, the goddess of learning herself. Samskritam is praised as 'devavANI', the language of gods. Hence the word vANI." "The word apUrva has many similar type of meanings. pUrva in samskritam signifies the Eastern direction or in terms of time, a time before. Adding the prefix 'a' in front of pUrva signifies the exact opposite. Hence, apUrva can be interpreted as the Western direction or 'never before'. apUrva can also be interpreted as unique." "So putting the words apUrva and vANI together, we have 'the voice from the West' or 'a voice that is unique and was never before'. This bimonthly is both a voice from the West and a unique one too, for, never before in the history of the Samskritam Language has a Samskritam periodical been started on the Internet." |
